Construction Rubber Components

Construction equipment and building systems span a wider range of rubber applications than most industries, spanning excavator hydraulic cylinder seals operating at 5,000 PSI in mud and gravel to EPDM building envelope gaskets that must maintain weathertight compression through fifty years of thermal cycling. An excavator hydraulic seal fails from abrasion and contamination, not chemistry. A building curtain wall gasket fails from UV and compression set, not pressure. Each application zone in the construction industry has a distinct failure mode and a distinct compound that addresses it.

Wayne Rubber manufactures custom rubber seals, gaskets, o-rings, vibration mounts, wear components, and protective parts for construction equipment OEMs, building product manufacturers, civil infrastructure contractors, and mechanical system suppliers from Wixom, Michigan, centrally located within the Michigan, Ohio, and Indiana construction market.

Construction Rubber Applications by Category

Construction rubber requirements fall into five distinct categories, each with different failure modes and compound requirements. Heavy equipment hydraulics are dominated by contamination and abrasion. Building envelope systems are dominated by UV, compression set, and thermal cycling. Civil infrastructure seals face chemical exposure from groundwater and concrete chemistry. Mechanical systems (HVAC, plumbing) need pressure and temperature resistance. Concrete and aggregate equipment needs maximum abrasion resistance.

Excavators, Cranes, and Heavy Equipment
  • Hydraulic cylinder rod and piston seals: polyurethane (AU) for maximum extrusion resistance under high-pressure hydraulic cycling; NBR for standard mineral hydraulic oil systems; HNBR for high-temperature hydraulic circuits on high-output excavators above NBR’s service limit

Critical Selection Issue

Why Construction Hydraulic Seals Fail Faster Than Industrial Hydraulic Seals

Construction equipment hydraulic cylinders operate in the most contaminated environments of any hydraulic application. Excavator and dozer cylinders work through mud, sand, abrasive rock particles, and compacted clay, all of which attempt to enter the cylinder bore past the rod wiper seal on every stroke. Industrial hydraulic cylinders in factory settings operate in controlled environments with filtered fluid and no external contamination source. The failure modes are fundamentally different.

Standard industrial hydraulic seal designs using NBR o-rings and PTFE backup rings fail rapidly in construction service because the wiper seal (the outer-facing seal that prevents external contamination from entering the cylinder) is the critical component, not the internal pressure seal. A standard NBR wiper seal has adequate chemical resistance to hydraulic oil but insufficient hardness and abrasion resistance to exclude rock particles under the scraping loads imposed by heavy contamination on each rod retraction stroke.

Polyurethane wiper seals at 80-90 Shore A hardness provide dramatically better contamination exclusion than standard NBR or PTFE wipers in construction service. The hard, abrasion-resistant polyurethane lip scrapes contamination cleanly from the rod surface rather than allowing it to be dragged into the bore. The improvement in cylinder service life between NBR and polyurethane wipers on construction equipment operating in high-contamination environments is typically measured in seasons, not months.

The internal rod seal and piston seal can remain NBR or HNBR; these operate in clean hydraulic fluid and their failure mode is chemical attack and compression set under operating pressure, not mechanical abrasion. The correct construction hydraulic cylinder specification is therefore a polyurethane wiper seal at the outer face combined with NBR or HNBR internal seals, not an all-polyurethane or all-NBR solution.

When replacing construction equipment hydraulic cylinder seals, always replace the wiper seal with polyurethane, not with the NBR wiper that may have been in the original seal kit. Many aftermarket seal kits for excavators and dozers supply NBR wipers for cost reasons. Wayne Rubber manufactures polyurethane wiper seals to match standard seal kit dimensions and can supply them as drop-in replacements that significantly extend cylinder service intervals on equipment operating in high-contamination construction environments.
Compound Selection

Construction Compound Selection Guide

Compound Construction Applications Key Advantage Avoid When
EPDM Building curtain wall gaskets, window and door frame seals, roofing flashings, water main pipe joint gaskets, HVAC duct seals, plumbing system gaskets, tunnel segment seals, manhole seals Best outdoor UV and ozone aging; exceeds 50-year service life in building envelope applications when properly compressed; standard for infrastructure pipe gaskets and NSF-61 potable water contact; resists mild alkaline groundwater and cement laitance Any petroleum hydraulic fluid or lubricant contact; fuel-wetted equipment seals; aromatic solvent exposure; locations where NBR or neoprene is the building standard for oil-adjacent applications
Neoprene (CR) Bridge expansion joint seals, precast panel seals, loading dock bumpers and door seals, manhole gaskets, concrete form seals, structural bearing pads (laminated), pipe hanger isolators Moderate oil resistance alongside good UV and ozone resistance; the balanced general-purpose construction compound for applications with moderate oil splash potential; good compression resilience for bridge expansion joints and bearing pads over decades of service Applications requiring best-possible UV resistance (use EPDM); sustained high-temperature service above 250°F; concentrated chemical exposure in industrial plant construction
NBR Excavator and crane hydraulic cylinder internal seals (rod and piston), heavy equipment engine oil seals, final drive and slew ring oil seals, standard mineral hydraulic oil system seals on construction equipment Cost-effective petroleum hydraulic oil and engine oil resistance; the baseline compound for construction equipment hydraulic systems using standard mineral hydraulic oil Outdoor UV and ozone-exposed locations; wiper seal positions (use polyurethane instead); high-temperature hydraulic circuits above 250°F (use HNBR); any building envelope or weathering application
Urethane (AU/EU) Hydraulic cylinder wiper seals on excavators, dozers, and cranes in abrasive construction environments; concrete pump wear rings; aggregate screening panels; conveyor scraper blades; wear pads on material handling equipment at construction sites Highest abrasion resistance of any elastomer; polyurethane wiper seals outlast NBR wipers by a large margin in high-contamination construction equipment applications; concrete pump wear rings provide better service life than standard rubber in wet abrasive concrete contact (use EU grades for water-adjacent applications) Any caustic concrete chemistry contact above EU grades’ resistance; sustained water above 140°F (use EU not AU); petroleum oil system internal seals (NBR or HNBR is better for internal pressure sealing)
HNBR High-output excavator and crane hydraulic seals above NBR’s temperature limit, high-pressure hydraulic systems on large construction equipment with elevated operating temperatures, crawler and drive motor seals on high-horsepower equipment Hot oil resistance to 300°F with ozone resistance added; the correct upgrade from NBR for large-horsepower construction equipment where hydraulic fluid temperatures routinely exceed 250°F under sustained heavy-duty operation Cost-sensitive standard hydraulic applications where NBR’s temperature limit is not exceeded; wiper seal positions (polyurethane still preferred for contamination exclusion regardless of compound)
Natural Rubber (NR) Mechanical equipment vibration isolation pads, seismic isolation bearing elements, structural bridge bearing pads, laminated bridge bearings, anti-vibration mats for construction site equipment, concrete form expansion seals Lowest hysteresis and best dynamic isolation performance for mechanical equipment isolation; standard for laminated bridge bearings and seismic isolation components where defined dynamic modulus and damping are specified; highest resilience for bridge bearing pads under sustained compressive load Any petroleum oil or UV-exposed outdoor location; chemical exposure in construction site environments; direct soil or concrete contact where abrasion is a failure mode
SBR General construction weatherstripping, compressed sheet gaskets for flanged pipe connections in construction temporary works, expansion joint filler material in concrete construction joints Low-cost general-purpose compound for construction temporary works and non-critical sealing where service life is measured in months rather than years; available in standard sheet form for field-cut gasket fabrication by contractors Any long-term UV or ozone-exposed application (SBR cracks in outdoor service); oil or fuel contact; any application where compression set resistance is critical for seal integrity
Do not use SBR or standard natural rubber sheet gaskets for long-term building or infrastructure sealing. Red rubber (SBR) and cut natural rubber sheet gaskets are widely available at building supply and plumbing distributors as low-cost flange gasket material. Both compounds have poor ozone resistance and will crack and fail in outdoor service within two to five years. For building flange gaskets, EPDM is the correct specification for water service and HVAC; neoprene for locations with oil splash potential. SBR and natural rubber sheet gaskets are acceptable for temporary construction use only, not for permanent installed building or infrastructure joints.

Michigan and Midwest Market

Serving Michigan and Midwest Construction

Wayne Rubber | Wixom, MI | Detroit Metro Construction Corridor

Wayne Rubber’s Wixom facility is centrally located for Michigan’s construction market. The Detroit metro area is one of the most active commercial construction markets in the Midwest, with significant infrastructure investment in road, bridge, and utility work through MDOT programs. Michigan’s Great Lakes location creates specific construction rubber requirements: freeze-thaw cycling for bridge and infrastructure seals, deicing chemical resistance for exposed joints, and the wide seasonal temperature range from -20°F winters to 90°F+ summer heat that tests building envelope gasket compression set more aggressively than moderate-climate markets. Wayne Rubber’s team understands these regional requirements and can specify compounds for Michigan’s specific construction environment.
