About Wayne Rubber

Custom Rubber Manufacturer
Wixom, Michigan

Wayne Rubber is a custom rubber manufacturing company located in Wixom, Michigan, 20 miles northwest of Detroit in the heart of one of North America’s densest manufacturing corridors. We manufacture custom molded rubber components: seals, gaskets, o-rings, vibration mounts, diaphragms, bellows, grommets, and specialty molded parts across more than 12 elastomer families for industrial, automotive, defense, aerospace, food processing, medical, and specialty markets.

Our engineering team works with customers from first specification through production, selecting compounds and geometries that fit the application rather than the catalog. Customers come to Wayne Rubber when a standard o-ring or cut gasket is not the right answer; when the geometry, compound, or performance requirement demands a part that is designed and molded for the specific job.

What We Do

Custom Rubber Manufacturing from Specification to Production

Wayne Rubber’s core capability is custom rubber molding: taking a customer’s design requirement (a print, a failed part, a description of the application, or a temperature and fluid specification) and producing a molded rubber component that solves the sealing or isolation problem. We work from prototype quantities through full production runs, and we maintain tooling to enable efficient changeovers between part geometries and compounds.

Compression molding is our highest-volume process, suited for solid rubber parts of moderate complexity, flat gaskets, and parts with low undercuts. Transfer molding allows more complex geometries and tighter dimensional control, particularly for o-rings, shaft seals, and parts with internal features. Injection molding serves high-volume production runs where cycle time and dimensional consistency at volume are the priority. All three processes are available at Wayne Rubber.

Compound selection is integrated into every project from the beginning. The correct compound for a given application depends on the fluid contact, the temperature range, the presence of UV or ozone exposure, the compression set requirement, the required hardness for the sealing load, and the regulatory environment (FDA, USP Class VI, MIL-SPEC, AMS, or UL 94). Our engineering team has deep familiarity with the compound selection process across all standard and specialty elastomers and provides this guidance as part of every project engagement, not as a separate consulting service.

Rubber-to-metal bonding is available for components that require a rigid structural element alongside the elastomeric sealing or isolation function. Engine mounts, vibration isolators, bonded seals, and over-molded inserts are produced through this process. The adhesive system and surface preparation are selected for the specific elastomer and substrate combination to ensure bond integrity over the service life of the part.

Capabilities

Manufacturing Capabilities

Compression Molding

The most versatile process for solid rubber parts. Uncured compound is placed directly in an open mold, which closes under heat and pressure to cure the part to shape. Well-suited for flat gaskets, seals, vibration mounts, and moderate-complexity parts. Lowest tooling cost. Available for all elastomers. Learn more about molding.

Transfer Molding

Compound is placed in a pot and transferred under pressure into a closed mold cavity. Enables tighter dimensional tolerances and more complex internal geometries than compression molding. Preferred for precision o-rings, complex shaft seals, and parts requiring dimensional consistency across the run.

Injection Molding

Compound is injected under high pressure into a closed mold through a controlled runner system. Fastest cycle time, highest dimensional consistency, and lowest per-part cost at production volumes. Preferred for high-volume precision parts. Requires higher tooling investment than compression or transfer processes.

Rubber-to-Metal Bonding

Elastomeric rubber bonded to metal or rigid plastic substrates during the molding process using structural adhesive systems. Used for engine mounts, vibration isolators, bonded o-rings, and over-molded assemblies. The correct adhesive system for each elastomer-substrate combination is critical for bond integrity. Learn more.

Rubber Compound Supply

Rubber compound mixing from supplied elastomer base and additive systems using internal mixer equipment. Produces uniform, well-dispersed compounds for consistent molded part performance. Compound batches are tracked for lot traceability. Unvulcanized compound available in sheet, strip, or calendered form for customer use. Learn more.

Material Testing

Physical property testing of rubber compounds and molded parts: tensile strength, elongation, compression set, hardness (Shore A and Shore D), fluid immersion, heat aging, and low-temperature flexibility. Test results provided to specification as part of the quality documentation package for defense, aerospace, and regulated-industry programs. Learn more.

How We Work

From Specification to Delivered Parts

01
Application Review

You provide the application environment: fluid contact, temperature range, pressure, regulatory requirements, and dimensional drawing or failed part. Our engineering team reviews the compound and geometry requirements and confirms the specification before quoting.

02
Compound and Tool Selection

We select the compound that fits the application and quote the tooling and per-part cost. New tooling is supplied by Wayne Rubber for custom geometries. Standard AS568 and catalog geometries may be available without new tooling.

03
Prototype and First Article

First articles are produced from the production tool and submitted for dimensional and physical property inspection. First Article Inspection (FAI) documentation available for defense and aerospace programs per AS9102 or customer-specific FAI requirements.

04
Production and Documentation

Production runs are processed with batch traceability and Certificate of Conformance provided with each shipment. Defense, aerospace, medical, and regulated-industry programs receive full material and processing traceability documentation as part of the standard delivery package.

29445 Wall Street
Wixom, MI 48393

20 miles northwest of Detroit. Within one day’s drive of the majority of Midwest manufacturing: the Michigan automotive corridor from Detroit to Grand Rapids, the Ohio industrial markets from Toledo to Columbus, the Chicago and Indiana industrial base, and the Ontario automotive supply chain across the border.

Wayne Rubber serves customers throughout Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, and the broader Midwest manufacturing region with production parts, replacement seals, and prototype quantities on standard lead times. Expedited service available for urgent requirements.

Michigan is one of the most concentrated manufacturing states in the United States. The Detroit metro area includes the headquarters and major facilities of the domestic automotive OEMs, their Tier 1 supplier networks, defense contractors with southeastern Michigan presence, and a large base of industrial and specialty manufacturers. Wixom specifically has a strong manufacturing industrial base. Wayne Rubber is part of that established manufacturing community, with direct access to the engineering and procurement talent that supports Michigan’s industrial base.

Wayne Rubber’s Michigan location means shorter lead times and simpler logistics for customers in the Great Lakes region compared to suppliers based on either coast. Same-region supply chain relationships support faster engineering conversations, quicker prototype turnaround, and the ability to visit the facility during development programs for customers who value that access.

Why Wayne Rubber

What to Expect When You Work With Wayne Rubber

Engineering depth at the start of every project. Wayne Rubber’s team engages on compound selection, geometry review, and application requirements before quoting. Customers who have had compound failures or seal performance issues in the field get a diagnosis of the failure mode and a compound recommendation that addresses it, not just a quote for the same part in a different color.

All three molding processes under one roof. Most custom rubber shops specialize in one molding process. Wayne Rubber runs compression, transfer, and injection molding, which means the correct process for the part geometry and volume can be selected without compromising on the design or switching suppliers as volumes increase.

12+ elastomer families in production. Standard shops carry four or five compound families. Wayne Rubber’s compound range covers the full spectrum from general-purpose EPDM and NBR through specialty fluorosilicone, FFKM, AEM, and HNBR that are required for aerospace, defense, medical, and biodiesel applications. Customers do not need a separate specialist supplier for specialty compound work.

Full documentation for regulated industries. Defense, aerospace, medical device, and food processing customers require Certificate of Conformance, material traceability, First Article Inspection reports, and compound test data as standard deliverables. Wayne Rubber provides this documentation as part of every regulated-industry shipment without treating it as an add-on service.
