Custom Rubber Hitch Covers & Accessories
A rubber hitch cover is a molded plug or cap that seals an open trailer hitch receiver, keeping road salt, water, and debris out of the tube and protecting shins and bumpers from the exposed opening. Molded rubber suits the job because it flexes into a friction fit, absorbs impact, and will not rust or seize inside the receiver the way metal can.
Wayne Rubber manufactures custom molded hitch covers, receiver plugs, ball covers, and towing accessories for aftermarket brands, distributors, and vehicle OEMs. We mold to your dimensions and branding in weather-grade compounds, from first article through production volumes, at our Wixom, Michigan plant.
Hitch Components We Mold
Hitch Receiver Covers & Plugs
Molded plugs that seal the open receiver tube against salt, water, and debris. Friction-fit or tabbed designs in standard 1-1/4″, 2″, 2-1/2″, and 3″ sizes, or to your dimensions.
Hitch Ball Covers
Protective covers that keep grease off clothing and cargo and shield the ball from corrosion between tows. Stretch-fit geometries in flexible weather-grade compounds.
Hitch Step Pads & Bumpers
Molded pads and bumpers that add grip to hitch steps and protect painted surfaces from contact during hookup.
Wiring Connector Covers
Dust caps and weather covers for 4-way and 7-way trailer connectors, keeping moisture and corrosion out of the pins between uses.
Coupler & Tongue Covers
Covers and caps that protect trailer couplers and tongue jacks from weather during storage and transport.
Anti-Rattle Pads & Bushings
Molded pads and bushings that take up slack between the shank and receiver, reducing rattle and wear while towing.
Material Selection for Towing Parts
Hitch accessories live in one of the harshest environments a rubber part can face: direct sun, road salt, freeze-thaw cycling, gravel impact, and no maintenance. The failure mode is almost always the same, a compound that hardens, cracks, and falls out after a season or two. Material choice is what separates a part that lasts from one that gets warranty claims.
| Material | Why It Fits Hitch Parts | Trade-Off |
|---|---|---|
| EPDM | Outstanding ozone, UV, and weather resistance plus road-salt and water resistance. The default for exposed towing parts. | Not for oil or fuel contact |
| TPV / Santoprene | Weather resistant and recyclable, with good flexibility and consistent injection molding for higher volumes. | Lower heat ceiling than thermoset rubber |
| Neoprene (CR) | Balanced weathering with moderate oil resistance and very good abrasion resistance. | Costs more than EPDM |
| Natural rubber / SBR | Excellent tear strength and impact resilience for pads and bumpers in cost-sensitive programs. | Poor UV and ozone resistance when exposed |
Custom Molding, Branding and Private Label
Hitch covers are a natural branding surface, which is why so many are sold with a logo, emblem, or team mark on the face. We mold raised or recessed logos and lettering directly into the part, so the branding is part of the geometry rather than a printed layer that wears off. Color matching, multi-durometer construction, and insert molding for metal or plastic components are all available.
For aftermarket brands and distributors, we manufacture to your design under private label, including first-article samples for approval before production. Tooling and part design support is available if you are starting from a concept rather than a finished drawing. See custom rubber molding and prototyping.
Who We Supply
We manufacture hitch accessories for aftermarket accessory brands building a branded product line, distributors and retailers sourcing private-label goods, towing and trailer equipment manufacturers, and vehicle and agricultural equipment OEMs specifying accessory components. Programs run from low-volume prototype and first-article quantities through sustained production, with domestic manufacturing and the documentation your quality system requires. Frequently Asked Questions
What is a rubber hitch cover for?
A rubber hitch cover plugs an open trailer hitch receiver to keep road salt, water, mud, and debris out of the tube, which prevents corrosion and buildup that makes inserting a shank difficult. It also softens the exposed opening, protecting shins and nearby bumpers from impact.
What size hitch cover do I need?
Hitch covers are sized to the receiver opening. The most common is 2 inch, with 1-1/4 inch on lighter-duty vehicles and 2-1/2 or 3 inch on heavy-duty applications. Measure the inside opening of the receiver tube to confirm before specifying.
What is the best rubber for hitch covers?
EPDM is the usual best choice because it resists ozone, UV, water, and road salt, which are the conditions that destroy exposed towing parts. TPV is a good option for higher-volume injection molded designs. Unprotected commodity compounds tend to crack within a season of sun exposure.
Can you mold our logo into a hitch cover?
Yes. Raised or recessed logos, emblems, and lettering are molded directly into the part as part of the tool geometry, so the branding does not wear off the way printed or applied graphics do. Color matching and private label manufacturing are also available.
Do you make custom hitch covers to our own design?
Yes. We manufacture to your drawing or work from a concept and provide design and tooling support. First-article samples are produced for approval before production, and programs run from prototype quantities through sustained volume.
Why do hitch covers fall out or crack?
Two causes dominate. UV and ozone exposure harden an unprotected compound until it cracks, and a hardened part loses the flexibility that held its friction fit. Specifying a weather-grade compound such as EPDM and designing adequate interference for the receiver tolerance solves both.
Building a Towing Accessory Line?
Send us your drawing, a sample part, or just the receiver size and branding you have in mind. We will recommend a compound, quote tooling and parts, and produce a first article for approval. Domestic molding from our Wixom, Michigan plant.
